Water
In
mid-1998, the World Bank extended a US$ 30 million loan to Armenia to
modernize the water supply system in Yerevan. The project was designed
to make water available round the clock in areas of the city where the
supply was limited to only a few hours per day. A management contract
for the operation of the Yerevan water and water-waste system was awarded
to an Italian consortium (ACEA Spa) in November 1999. The involvement
of an international operator as manager is expected to establish a sustainable
and efficient water and sewerage system, which will provide for a substantial
increase in the availability of water, reduction in losses, electricity
savings and increased payment collection. This project marks the first
significant involvement of the private sector in municipal infrastructure.
With the assistance of USTDA, analysis of the water supply system in other
regions of Armenia has been conducted. The World Bank is contributing
further credits to development of Armenia's water resources.
